The choir’s home is in the ancient and quintessential Suffolk village of Horringer, just a few miles from the market town of Bury St Edmunds. Horringer’s history is intertwined with Bury St Edmunds, its Abbey and the influential Hervey family, who built Horringer’s iconic neoclassical Ickworth House, now a National Trust property.
In 1971 villager Miss Winifred Newberry (1917-2011) and a group of friends, began singing Christmas Carols on the village green. Early the following year they formed the choir. Two of the founding members still sing in the choir. Now, almost 55 years later, the choir remains an integral part of Horringer’s social calendar.
Our 25 or so members are drawn not only from Horringer but from the surrounding villages and from Bury St Edmunds itself. We enjoy singing a wide repertoire of both secular and sacred music, with songs from the shows, anthems, oratorios, requiems and of course, Christmas carols!
We are a friendly, relaxed choir and have a well-deserved reputation for the care and mutual support given by members to each other.
